Kazan celebrates traditional Tatar holiday – Sabantuy

As the Republic of Tatarstan celebrated today (August 1) the traditional holiday Sabantuy, the Kazan authorities invited all participants to the 16th FINA World Championships to attend an entertaining cultural and musical event located in the Privolzhskiy district.

Sabantuy is one of the oldest and most important celebrations for the people of Tatarstan. It celebrates and honours sport, labour, agility and strength.

The participants had the opportunity to discover beautiful costumes, traditional songs and dances as well as take part in the rich cultural programme and sports contests which were held in a festive atmosphere.

Traditional competitions of Sabantuy comprise of battling with sacks on a bar, running with water-full buckets and other challenging games which require dexterity and control of physical assets.

During the opening ceremony, also attended by FINA Executive Director Mr. Cornel Marculescu, Tartar Republic President Mr. Rustam Minnikhanov said: “I would like to congratulate all of you on the occasion of Sabantuy, a significant Tatar holiday with an ancient tradition. People from different confessions, mainly Christians and Muslims, coexist peacefully in Tatarstan since centuries. This summer we are warmly welcoming the FINA World Championships in our beautiful city of Kazan and I would like to thank you all for making this event a great success so far.”

The FINA World Championships are currently underway and will run through August 9. The FINA World Masters Championships will then continue until August 16.
