PR 64 - Youth WP 2014: Hungary crowned World champions in Istanbul


Lausanne (SUI), August 11, 2014 – Hungary won an intense battle against Spain that ended in penalty shootouts 10-8 to clinch the title at the FINA World Men’s Youth Water Polo Championships (18 & Under), organised in Istanbul, Turkey from August 2-10, 2014. Two years ago at the inaugural edition in Perth, the Hungarian squad had finished second behind Italy.

The nine-day competition featuring 20 water polo teams from strong and rising nations in the sport concluded on a high note on Sunday August 10 with the last three games decided by penalty shootouts.

In the first face-off of the day, for places seventh and eighth, defending champions Italy defeated Croatia 10-8. 

In the fight for ranks fifth and sixth, host Turkey stayed strong to the end, losing to Montenegro 13-14 after penalties.

The battle for the minor medal played out between Russia and Serbia, with the Russians edging their rivals by a two-goal margin (11-9) in extra time.  

The tournament’s Most Valuable Player was Roger Tahull (ESP) while Soma Vogel (HUN) and Guilherme Gomez (BRA) were voted the Most Valuable Goalkeeper and Leading Scorer (with 27 goals), respectively.
