PR 03 - World League 2014 (M): Olympic champion Croatia suffers second loss in penalty shootouts


Lausanne (SUI), January 14, 2014 – Leading teams Hungary, Italy, Serbia and Montenegro continued to look strong, each winning their respective match during the third round of the FINA Men's Water Polo World League 2014, held on January 14 in Europe.

In Group A, defending World League winner Serbia eclipsed Russia in Kazan, winning 12-8.

In Group B, 2012 Olympic champion Croatia and 2013 World champion Hungary delivered a thrilling battle in Sibenik, with the visiting Hungarians eventually prevailing over the local squad in a score of 8-7 after penalty shootouts. The score was at 6-6 after regular time.

In Group C, World silver medallist Montenegro delighted the home crowd with a clean victory over Germany in Herceg Novi, scoring 13-10. In Bergamo, 2012 Olympic silver medallist Italy crushed Slovakia, winning 12-5.

The fourth, fifth and last rounds are scheduled for February 11th, March 11th, April 2nd and 15th, respectively.

The composition of the European Groups of the 2014 Men’s World League is as follows:

GROUP A – Romania, Russia, Serbia
GROUP B – Croatia, Greece, Hungary
GROUP C – Germany, Italy, Montenegro, Slovakia

The newly named FINA Men's Intercontinental Water Polo Tournament – the World League’s preliminary tournament between teams from the Americas, Asia, Africa and Oceania – will be staged in Shanghai (CHN) from May 26 to June 1, 2014.

The Men’s Super Final will be held in Dubai (UAE) from June 16-21, 2014 featuring the eight best teams from the World League preliminaries.

GROUP B: HUN, 5 pts (2W); GRE, 2 (1W, 1L); CRO, 2 (2L)
