PR 92 - World League 2014 (W): Spain and Italy fire in season opener


Lausanne (SUI), November 19, 2013 – The women’s national teams of Spain and Italy tasted their first victory of the 11th edition of the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League in the inaugural round of games taking place today, November 19, in Europe.

In Group A, World champion Spain defeated local team Russia 13-11 in Chelyabinsk while in Group B, visiting squad Italy was too strong for Greece, winning 12-9 in Athens.

The four other rounds for these groups are scheduled on January 21, February 18, March 18 and April 22, 2014.

The composition of the European Groups of the 2014 Women’s World League is as follows:

GROUP A – Spain, Great Britain, Russia
GROUP B – Greece, Hungary, Italy

Preliminary rounds will also be held in 2014 in Africa, the Americas and Asia/Oceania (locations and dates will be announced soon). Beijing (CHN) will host the Women’s Super Final from June 10-15, 2014.

Provisional rankings:
GROUP A: ESP, 3 pts (1 win); RUS, 0 (1 loss); GBR (did not play in round 1)
GROUP B: ITA, 3 pts (1W); GRE, 0 (1L); HUN (did not play in round 1)

Group A: GBR-RUS (Manchester)
Group B: ITA-HUN (Catania)
