PR 79 - SWC 2013: Meilutyte sets WR in 100 breast, team Russia makes history in mixed relays


Lausanne (SUI), October 14, 2013 – Three World records were established at the third stop of the FINA Swimming World Cup 2013, taking place from October 12-13 in Moscow (RUS).

Olympic and World champion Ruta Meilutyte (LTU) established a new global mark, and new World Cup record, in the women’s 100m breaststroke (1:02.36). This was the meet’s top performance, 1016 points. She lowered the previous WR, set in 2009 by US Rebecca Soni (1:02.70).

In the mixed freestyle and medley relays, team Russia set new World records at home with respective times of 1:33.01 and 1:41.70.

Sarah Sjoestroem (SWE) walked away with five gold medals: 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, 50m and 100m butterfly. Katinka Hosszu, from Hungary, leader of the women’s global classification, won 10 medals in Moscow, including victories in the 200m butterfly, 200m and 400m IM.

Six European swimming nations claimed all victories in women’s events: Hungary, Lithuania, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Ukraine.

The meet’s best performer among men was Chad Le Clos (RSA), whose winning time of 1:49.83 in the 200m butterfly earned 980 points. The South African also took out the 100m butterfly and 200m IM in the Russian capital. Le Clos continues to lead the overall men’s ranking, with 197 points.

Local star Vladimir Morozov bagged three gold medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle, and 100m IM.

Other countries with medal in the men’s events were Australia, Hungary and Poland.
