PR 39 - Riccione (ITA) welcomes record number of participants


Lausanne (SUI), June 4, 2012 - After a successful 2004 edition, the lively seaside town of Riccione, Italy, again plays host to the FINA World Masters Championships, welcoming this time a record number of 14,000 participants from June 3-17.

No less than 9,672 swimmers will hit the pool at the "Italo Nicoletti" Sports Centre while another 2,326 will take to the open water in the Adriatic Sea. 1,322 water polo players will throw the ball, 567 synchro swimmers will perform a routine while 247 divers make a splash!

Participants from the host federation will come in great number (about 4,800) but also those from Germany, France, Russia, USA, Great Britain, Brazil, Canada, Spain, Netherlands, Australia, Japan, Sweden, Venezuela, Switzerland and Ukraine. A few from Mongolia, Zimbabwe and Fiji will also make the trip, making the World Masters a true universal experience.

The swimming competition kicks off June 10 and will have 22 events, including 4x50m mixed medley and freestyle events; a 3km race will take place in open water on June 16 and 17; water polo games will be held from June 3-9; divers will compete on the 1m, 3m and 10m boards starting June 4 and the synchronised swimming events will be held from June 12-17 with Solo, Duet, Trio, Team and a Free Combination event.

Since 1990, Masters athletes aged 25 to more than 90 years old come and share their life passion for Aquatics, competing in one of FINA’s five aquatic disciplines – swimming, diving, water polo, synchronised swimming and open water swimming –while promoting fitness, fun and friendship.
