PR 06 - Gianniotis (GRE) reclaims a spot at the top, Fabian (USA) best among women

Lausanne (SUI), February 6, 2012 – Nice performances and close finishes were observed last weekend during the second stage of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup in Viedma (ARG) on February 4. The competition welcomed 24 women and 31 men from 20 countries, including some big names in the world of open water.

The powerful Spyridon Gianniotis (GRE) prevailed with a solid win over the rest of the field, touching home in 1h55m29s01. Also winner of Race 1, the Greek continues to be the top qualifier in the event. His closest challenger was Canada’s rising open water star Richard Weinberger, who took bronze in Santos and arrived three seconds behind (1h55m32s18) in Viedma. Russian great Evgeny Drattsev was third with a time of 1h55m35s32.

Among women, U.S. medal hope Eva Fabian had a comfortable victory in 2h02m08s11, putting a full six-second gap between herself and second-place finisher and teammate Haley Anderson (2h02m14s14). Germany’s Nadine Reichert improved her fourth place from Santos to secure the bronze medal, clocking 2h02m21s23.

Due to severe weather conditions in the Parana River, the third leg of the FINA Open Water Swimming Grand Prix is postponed until further notice.
