PR 28 - Asia/Oceania group prelims kick off May 9


Lausanne (SUI), May 6, 2011 – In the men’s field, after the qualification of Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Italy from the European tournament, it is now the turn of the Asia/Oceania and American groups to select their teams for the Super Final of the FINA Men’s Water Polo World League 2011, starting June 21 in Florence (ITA).

The men’s national teams of Australia, China, Japan, Kazakhstan and New Zealand will contest the Asia/Oceania qualification firstly in Auckland (NZL) from May 9-13 and then in Sydney (AUS) from May 16-20. In the American group, Canada will play against the U.S. in Costa Mese, California (USA), from May 12-15.

The women’s preliminary round for the Asia/Oceania group, comprising Australia, China, Japan and New Zealand will also take place in Auckland (NZL) and Sydney (AUS) at the same time as the men’s tournament. Still among women, USA and Canada will be playing their first games in Newport Beach, California, from May 19-22.

Finally, seven national teams from Europe, divided in two groups, will play their preliminary rounds, hoping to get their ticket for the Super Final of the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League in Tianjin (CHN) from June 14-19. Group 1 (Great Britain, Greece, Hungary and Spain) will play in Barcelona (ESP) from May 13-15 and then stop in Athens (GRE) from May 20-22 while Siracusa (ITA) will host the games of Group 2 (Germany, Italy and Russia) from May 18-22.      

The two Super Finals will be played by the men’s and women’s best eight teams from the preliminary rounds.
